Agriculture has been around for about 10,000-12,000 years.  Before this time people were hunters and gatherers and had to move around often to find food.  During this time more and more people began to settle into villages to raise crops and domesticated animals.  The shift from people being hunters and gatherers to raising crops and animals is called the agricultural revolution.

Agriculture is the world's largest industry.  Agriculture provides a living for 1 in 5 people.  However, agriculture is also the most environmentally harmful. There are currently 7 billion people on the earth and experts are predicting that the number will increase to 8.9 billion people by 2050.  If we want to be able to feed this many people we will have to make agriculture much more sustainable in a way that won't degrade our natural resources needed to grow food.
